Local Preservation Efforts Design Guidelines* Preservation Ordinance Preservation Element of Alachua County's Comprehensive Plan Alachua County, in its effots to emphasize the importance of historical resources in the community, recently had a Historic Structures survey conducted of the unincorporated areas of Alachua County. While a majority of the historic structures in the incorporated towns and cities have been documented, this is the first formal survey conducted in the unincorporated areas. The survey, completed in June of 2000, and titled: A Historic Structures Survey of Unincorporated Alachua County, was completed by Sherry Anderson, M.H.P. of Quatrefoil/Anderson Consulting for Alachua County. The publication was financed in part with historic preservation grant assistance provided by the Bureau of Historic Preservation, Division of Historical Resources, Florida Department of State, assisted by the Historic Preservation Advisory Council. The study found that only five properties in the unincorporated areas of Alachua County have been listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Of the 967 resources surveyed, 39 are considered potentially eligible for listing on the National Register. In addition, several historic districts were also identified as being potentially eligible for listing. The short-term recommendations listed in the study include the adoption of a Historic Preservation Ordinance, applying for Certified Local Government Status, and producing and adopting Design Guidelines. The long-term recommendations include the promotion of tax incentive/exemption programs, and working in conjuction with small communities with topics such as: a website, heritage tourism, a marker and plaque program, scenic roads, and informational materials.
