The Florida Historical Markers program was created in 1960. The purpose of the program is to increase public awareness of the rich cultural heritage of the state and to enhance the enjoyment of historic sites in Florida by its citizens and tourists. Through this program, historic markers and plaques are placed at sites of historical and visual interest to visitors in recognition of historic resources, persons or events that are significant in the areas of architecture, archaeology, Florida history and traditional culture. For more information on the historical markers program, please contact the Florida Department of State, Division of Historical Resources. Today Florida boasts over 400 historical markers, with new markers being put up each year. Alachua County alone has over 30 markers, due largely in part to the Alachua County Historical Commission, which has provided funding for many of the markers. Below is a list of the Historical Markers in Alachua County. For full text, please click on the title of desired Marker, and for location. please see map.
