It has been funded by the County with assistance from the Florida Department of State, Division of Historical Resources. No previous formal surveys have been conducted in the unincorporated areas of the County but a majority of the historic resources located in the incorporated towns and cities have been documented. Many of these communities have National Register Districts and individually listed properties that represent the development of these areas. Prior to this survey, however, most of the remaining historic buildings in the County have been undocumented. Only a handful of buildings located in the unincorporated areas of the County were previously listed in the Florida Site File(FSF). The FSF is located within the Division of Historical Resources, Florida Department of State, and serves as a clearinghouse for information on the cultural resources of the state. The FSF is an archive repository in which historic resources are documented on survey forms with accompanying maps and photographs. Only 4 sites in the Unincorporated area have been listed in National Register of Historic Places. The Register is the official list of the nation's cultural resources worthy of preservation. Authorized under the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the National Register includes districts, sites, buildings, structures, and objects that are significant at the local, state, and/or national level in the areas of history, architecture, archaelogy, engineering, and/or culture. The final product of the survey included the publication, maps for the locations of the structures, and several tables in dbf format documenting each historic structure according to a format in accordance with Division of Historic Resources. The tables were very exhaustive with descriptive data and have been simplified before being attached to the current shapefile. The original fields for the tables were given codes for descriptions, which were also transformed to their actual meanings before being attached to the current shapefile. The publication also had a published table, which gave more descriptive information than the electronic version tables for the building styles and more accurate information for the year the structure was built. All fields which were in the published table begin with a "Pu" and are toward the end of the attribute table. 2 other fields were added by the Alachua County Growth Management department and begin with "GM" (See attributes for descriptions on all the fields). Photographs were taken during the survey and were digitally scanned in tiff format. The names and paths to these images are stored in the attributes (See Filename, Path).
